Objectives and Functions

The National Film Archive of India was established in February, 1964 as a media unit of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India. Its main objectives and functions are :
to trace, acquire and preserve for the use of posterity the heritage of national cinema and a representative collection of world cinema
to classify and document data related to film and undertake and encourage research on cinema
to act as a centre for the dissemination of film culture in the country, and to promote Indian cinema abroad.
With Headquarters at Pune, NFAI has at present three Regional Offices viz. Bangalore, Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram. Since 1969 the NFAI has been a member of FIAF (International Federation of Film Archives) and has played an active role in the work of this organization.
