| The National Film
Archive of India was established in February, 1964 as a media
unit of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting,
Government of India. Its main objectives and functions are :

to trace, acquire and preserve for the use of posterity the
heritage of national cinema and a representative collection of
world cinema
|
|
to classify and document data related to film and undertake
and encourage research on cinema
|
|
to act as a centre for the dissemination of film culture in
the country, and to promote Indian cinema abroad.

| With Headquarters at Pune, NFAI
has at present three Regional Offices viz. Bangalore, Kolkata
and Thiruvananthapuram. Since 1969 the NFAI has been a member of
FIAF (International Federation of Film Archives) and has played
an active role in the work of this organization.
